Questions people ask between games

Is BackgammonTalk free?

Yes. BackgammonTalk is free to play, and every new adult account gets 1,000 coins to play for. Coins only raise the stakes at the bigger tables. They're for bragging, and can never be cashed out.

Do I need to download anything?

No. BackgammonTalk plays in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Open it, sign in with Google, and you're at the board. There's an Android app too.

Can we talk while we play?

Every game is a live voice call. You hear your opponent the moment the dice land, the groan included. There's chat too, for the friend who refuses to unmute.

How do I play a friend online?

Send them your link in a chat. They tap it, sign in with one tap, and sit down at your board. Don't want to wait for them? Play the robot until they arrive. Backgammon is a two-player game, so it's one friend per board.

What's the doubling cube?

The cube is how you raise the stakes mid-game. When you think you're winning, you turn it up to 2 and offer your opponent a choice: take it and play on for double, or give up the game now. Whoever takes it can turn it up again later. It's where the best trash talk happens.

Is tavla the same as shesh besh and backgammon?

Same board, same dice, same fifteen checkers. Tavla in Turkey and Greece, shesh besh across the Levant, tavli, nard, takhte: every café has its own name and its own house rules. BackgammonTalk plays the standard game.

Is it safe for teens?

Players aged 13 to 17 only ever play other teens, never adults, and never for coins. Under 13s can't sign up.

Shake. Slam.

Somebody in your family has been the best for fifty years. Find out.
