Play backgammon online with live voice

BackgammonTalk is backgammon the way it is played at the cafe table: two people, one board, and the shouting. It is free, it runs in your browser, and every game is a live voice call.

What is BackgammonTalk?

BackgammonTalk is a free online backgammon game from GabbleGames. It plays the standard game (see the rules) with fifteen checkers each, the bar, bearing off, gammons and the doubling cube. It is meant for people who already play tavla, shesh besh or nard with their family and friends and want to keep playing when they are far apart.

Live voice on every board

Most online backgammon is silent: you click, you wait, you win or lose. At a real table the fun is the sound, the slam of a checker and the groan when you are hit. Every BackgammonTalk game is a live voice call, so you hear your opponent the moment the dice land. There is chat too, for the friend who will not unmute.

Play a friend with one link

Backgammon has two players, so a game is one friend per board. Send your link in any chat. They tap it, sign in with one tap, and sit down at your board. If they are not there yet you can play the robot until they arrive. Cousins in Beirut, an uncle in Berlin and a grandmother who counts pips faster than you can blink: same board, any distance.

Free in your browser

BackgammonTalk needs no download. Open it on a phone, tablet or computer, sign in with Google, and you are at the board. There is an Android app as well. It is free to play, and every new adult account gets 1,000 coins to play for. Coins only raise the stakes at the bigger tables; they are for bragging and can never be cashed out.

Try the board before you sign up

You can try the real BackgammonTalk board on the home page against the app's robot: tap to roll, move your checkers, hit a lone checker and send it to the bar, and bring all fifteen home first. If you are new, read how to play backgammon first. It takes five minutes.

Your people, your list

BackgammonTalk keeps a list of the people you have played: who is online, who is in a game, and who still owes you a rematch. Tap a name and the next game starts. Boards and checkers to flex come with the game.

Why play online?

Backgammon is a game that needs an opponent, and the person you want to play may live in another country. Many families are spread across cities, and the evening game at the cafe or the carpet is the thing they miss. An online board gives you the same table at any time, with no need to carry a set, find a place to sit, or agree on a time to meet. The server rolls the dice and enforces the rules, so nobody has to argue about a forced move or a miscounted bear-off, and a game that you leave can be picked up from your phone.

On a phone, tablet or computer

BackgammonTalk runs in a browser on a phone, a tablet or a computer, so the same board follows you from the sofa to the desk. The voice call runs alongside the game, so you can look at the board while you talk, and a short game leaves room for a conversation, which is the point.

Safe for teens

Players aged 13 to 17 only ever play other teens, never adults, and never for coins. Children under 13 cannot sign up.
